    is central for all of us to feel confident and know where and how to participate Citizens need to understand their political rights as well as obligations and need to know how to use the political and social tools available to them As could be seen during the recent political upheavals women in the region increasingly know how to influence their surroundings and give their opinion a clear heard voice However many women still lack the possibilities to fulfil their role as active participating citizens This means that capacity building for decision making regardless of being actively involved in politics or not is crucial in empowering women to become full citizens and influence their own political social and economic environment Manara looks for best practices which contributed to closing the gap between men and women regarding the ability to participate politically Among others best practices can be Citizenship education for women e g on voting rights lived citizenship civic values Training in leadership and political communication advocacy skills Training for female decision makers on all levels of social economic and political life Facilitating of peer learning on political skills e g negotiating networking Excluded are Programmes contributing indirectly to enhanced political participation e g general education programmes on literacy Area II Creative ways to increase decent gainful self employment of women Limited access to decent work is one of the major obstacles for the advancement of women in the region and hinders them to enjoy equality with men Although women s participation in the labour market has increased significantly over the last decade access to decent and gainful work remains a serious issue Women have less paid jobs than men women are more likely to work in low value added sectors or the informal economy and women s jobs are often characterized by poor working conditions Women face higher job insecurity have less access to social security and work longer hours An increased economic power of women often enhances their ability of taking decisions in other realms of public and private life as well It becomes evident that economic empowerment to increase decent and gainful self employment of women is a cornerstone in reaching gender equality Among others Manara awards best practices that increase decent and gainful self employment of women by trough Projects that increase and diversify access to finance for women including microfinance Projects that support women s cooperatives e g self organisation of women in cooperatives or unions Advocacy work on women s employment conditions e g campaign against pay gap or research projects advocating on social protection of women in informal labor Capacity development for women entrepreneurs in informal and formal economy e g training courses on accounting or business strategy Initiatives that support women in economic leadership positions e g in company boards Clear implemented gender mainstreaming strategies coupled with equal pay for equal work e g in companies Excluded are Profit oriented initiatives by individual women Area III Rethinking gender equality and women s
